The book measures their love in the units children actually take seriously — rainbows, cookies, and the whole distance to the moon and back — rather than in the vague adult ones. The child is named through the pages, so the arithmetic is being done about them specifically. Softcover.
What it really does is put in writing what that relative has been saying all along, in a form the child can consult without needing them in the room. That is a useful thing to leave behind after a visit. Give it at the start of one, not the end; it will get read before you have reached the car.
