Each letter carries a small promise or a piece of advice — being brave, asking for help — addressed to the child by their printed name. That structure does something the usual alphabet book cannot: it gives a child a reason to reach the end other than completeness. Softcover.
It reads like a letter from the grown-ups who love them, which is exactly what it is, and the letter format is what keeps it usable past the age when the alphabet is news. Give it early for the letters and expect it to be kept for the other thing. A whole alphabet of small promises is a lot to leave a person.
