It walks the year month by month and keeps to concrete things: what the child learned, what they refused to eat, who they reached for. That last category is the one that dates a year most precisely and the one nobody thinks to write down. The name is printed on the cover and set into the story itself, in both places. Hardcover.
The difference between a record and a card is what happens to it afterwards. A card is read once by everyone at the party; this stays useful long after the candle is out, because it is the only account of the year that exists in sentences. Shelve it next to the photographs.
