Your child is recast as a bear, and the forest is unanimously in favour. It is a bedtime story with your little one at the centre of it as the most loved bear in the woods.
The day runs through forest adventures with the animal friends — bunnies, birds, deer and foxes — and the child's name appears on every page as they celebrate them. It ends with the whole forest whispering goodnight, which is the structural reason it works at that hour: the book winds down alongside the reader rather than finishing on a high. Hardcover.
Gentle and joyful is a hard combination to hold for a whole book, and the animals do most of that work. Nothing threatens anybody. For the age where a story has to be safe before it can be interesting, that is the correct order to put those in.
