The enchanted lands he travels through are arranged so that curiosity and courage open more doors than the crown does. That is the running joke and also the argument: being a prince turns out to be the least useful thing about him. Nothing in the plot is solved by rank. He is named throughout. Softcover.
It settles in as a storytime regular during the age when everything in the house is a kingdom and the stairs are a mountain pass. Read it in that phase and it slots straight into the game already in progress. The crown is optional; most children supply their own.
