A short message for the dedication page at the front. Leave it blank if you would rather not have one.

There is only one first Christmas, and that scarcity is the whole case for putting it in print.
The baby's name runs through the pages, and the story keeps its attention on the season's firsts — the lights, the laughter, the sheer newness of all of it. Nothing here needs the baby to understand what is happening; the book is doing the remembering on their behalf. It is bought most often for the December of the first year, and usually by people who have run out of things to buy a baby and want something that will still be around later. Hardcover.
That is its real use. Ribbon and rattles disappear by spring; a named book gets shelved, found again the following winter, and read to a child who is suddenly old enough to argue with it. Open it on the day, then let it live with the decorations.
