Asking a child to be your flower girl is a bigger request than it looks, mostly because she has no idea yet what she is agreeing to.
The book does the asking and then hands her something to hold while she works out what the job involves. She is named throughout, so the question is clearly for her rather than a role being filled by whoever is the right height.
