The search runs on playful rhymes, and the spook level is calibrated for small readers rather than for the adult reading aloud. That calibration is the whole reason it works at this age. Underneath the costumes it is a story about helping somebody who has lost something, which is a sturdier premise than a seasonal one and the reason it does not feel stranded in November. Read it in October by all means. It survives being read in March.
