Which Grandma Book When She Is Called Nana

Almost nobody calls their grandmother Grandmother. She is Nana, or Grammy, or Mimi, or the version a first grandchild mangled at eighteen months that the whole family then adopted for life.

That matters when you are buying a book with a title printed on the front, so it is the first thing to settle. There are four grandma books here and the name she answers to rules two of them in or out immediately.

Start with what she is called

If she is Nana

Nana Bear is built for her and only for her. It prints her name together with the year she became a grandmother, and the pages honour the kitchen chats, the bedtime stories and the hugs that fix most things.

The year is the part worth noticing. Grandmother books tend to be interchangeable, and a date on the cover is the one detail that ties a book to a person rather than to a role. If she is Nana, buy this one and stop reading.

If she is Grandma

The other three all carry Grandma on the front, so they work if that is what the household says and sit slightly wrong if it is not. There is no version of these with a name you type in — that option exists on the grandfather side of the shelf but not here, and it is better to know that before ordering than after.

If she goes by something else entirely, the honest recommendation is the book below that prints her actual name inside, where it will do more work than the word on the cover.

Then decide whose name is printed

How Much I Love Grandma sets her name through a story that moves between playful adventures and the small moments that accumulate over years. The premise is a fair one: grandmothers get thanked in passing and almost never in writing. This is the version that puts it in writing.

It is also the most configurable of the four, with a choice of blue, pink, green or yellow covers, and the only one starting at $39.99 rather than $19.99.

The other two print the child's name instead, which makes them gifts from the grandchild rather than about the grandmother. Loves Grandma gathers the everyday evidence — cookies baked, dresses mended, gardens tended, stories told twice by request. You are the best Grandma Ever works the same territory with a lighter touch: blanket forts, slightly burnt cookies, the warmest hugs on stormy days.

Between those two, the difference is temperature. One reads as a record of things she has done. The other reads as a child making an enthusiastic argument. If the child is old enough to hand it over and say something, the second suits the moment better.

Occasions other than Mother's Day

Most grandmother books get bought in the first half of May and that is a shame, because it is the occasion where they compete with the most other gifts.

Grandparents Day works better, and Nana Bear is written with it in mind. A birthday works better still. And the strongest version of this gift is the one given for nothing at all — which sounds like a line, but a book that arrives in an ordinary week is harder to file alongside the annual obligations.

Ordering

Three of the four start at $19.99 and all come in hardcover and softcover, chosen on the product page before adding to the cart. These are keepsakes more than daily readers, so softcover is a more defensible choice here than it is with a toddler's bedtime book — though hardcover still travels and stores better.

Everything is printed to order in the United States with a two to four business day production window before shipping. Nothing is held in stock.

Read the spelling of her name back before you pay — it appears in your cart, at checkout and on your order confirmation. Personalized books cannot be returned once printed, but a mistake reported quickly can usually be stopped before it reaches the printer, and anything damaged or misprinted we replace free.

The rest of the family titles sit in Family & Grandparent Stories. If you are buying for a mother rather than a grandmother, the split works differently and it is set out in what to give for Mother's Day besides a card.
